Dr. James Voorhees can claim many firsts in his role as the guiding force behind Instructional Technologies Inc. (ITI), the company he founded in 1995 which is a provider of advanced safety training solutions for the transportation industry. Among them are the first to provide computers to training departments, the first total online curriculum supported by a training management system designed from the ground up for trucking, the first to apply game engine technology to training for commercial drivers, the first to put training on in-cab devices and the first in the U.S, to introduce a training app for mobile devices. Today, more than 450 fleets are using ITI’s expertise and have provided over 12 million lessons for drivers.
Voorhees concentrates on introducing disruptive, cutting-edge technology into the commercial transportation industry, an approach that is now recommended by most major logistics insurers. The retired U.S. Army officer, with a doctorate in Psychology, spent 24 years in the service, including two tours of duty in Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot. He also served at NASA’s Ames Research Center where he led a team of 20 scientists developing new systems for advanced rotorcraft cockpits and advanced training technologies in addition to serving on committees of the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences. Voorhees is the author of more than 60 scientific publications and presentations. Today, he remains active in the National Private Truck Council, American Trucking Associations, Truckload Carriers Association, Commercial Drivers Training Association, National Association of Fleet Administrators, Specialized Carriers and Riggers, International Food Distributors Association, and more.
