Enough is enough with these protests over the ELD mandate. I'm a big fan of @OOIDA and any group that protects the rights of truckers but now you're just grasping at straws with statements like "devices are unsafe as they will force truck drivers to play “beat the clock” on highways across the nation". Drivers shouldn’t try to “beat the clock”. Refuse to take the load. Drivers, company owners, dispatchers need to learn to just say "sorry, there's no way I can legally run that load it that amount of time." Period.
This is another bunk statement "At present, none of the 193 devices listed on the FMCSA website have been validated by the agency or any unbiased, third-party testing program, OOIDA said." The PIT Group validated EROAD's ELD and Zonar was validated by Annette Sandberg. I agree that the whole self-certification thing is a mess but companies like EROAD and Zonar saw that and chose to have their independently validated. OOIDA shouldn’t make false statements.
The problem isn’t with the electronic logging technology, it’s with the Hours of Service rules, the need for more truck parking, shippers that detain drivers without repercussions, customers that make ridiculous demands…those are the problems. Yes, there are countless bandwagon ELD companies that don’t know a thing about the trucking industry but want a piece of the Mandate Pie…but is this the fault of the technology? No. And the continuous stalling, fighting and blaming of its use isn’t going to solve these other more important issues.
I’m not a fan of government-imposed regulations, especially those that are rushed through without thought or smell heavily of special interest dollars, but the ELD mandate is not one of those situations. It’s been 20 years since the technology was introduced and a mandate was first discussed! 20 years! Accept it, choose your technology vendor wisely and concentrate on the real problems of parking, HOS and detention times.
